Story

Rooted in the American Shaker tradition, Penna was conceived while studying how materials behaved when bent and formed. Through an iterative dialogue between designer and material, Penna took shape - highlighting the material’s structure and flexibility, while honoring its inherent properties and character.

Lightweight

Penna’s approach to materials and structure allows for its lightweight construction. Weighing approximately 22 lbs, the Lounge is easy to move and efficient to transport.

Flexible Support

Penna’s flexible back moves with the body in a soft and supportive manner, allowing for natural changes in posture.

New Form Language

Studio Gorm’s approach to materials yield forms that are familiar, while also new and different. The natural forms and lines of a single formed piece of plastic define a profile and silhouette for the Lounge that is unique in the market. Equally the Penna tables offer formal shapes with expressed edges and lapping planes that are both simple and original.

360 Degree Consideration

Every angle of the Penna lounge chair has been considered to assure that details, transitions, and forms are resolved. From its proprietary glide feet and tailored underside, to its material construction and stitching details, integrity in design is cohesive throughout the offer.

Studio Gorm

Studio Gorm creates simple, practical and thoughtful products, furniture, lighting, and exhibitions. Their designs are informed by speculative academic research which explores culture, history and technology, and how objects and ideas evolve to fit the needs of contemporary life. As designers, they draw from their background in sculpture and craft to create works that balance function and aesthetics. Their methods are deeply rooted in the act of physical making where an object’s form evolves out of an experimental constructive approach to design.

John and Wonhee are founding members of the design collective Furnishing Utopia, where they have worked to better understand, promote and preserve cultural heritage through workshops and exhibitions. Furnishing Utopia provides an international platform for critical dialog and creation of new knowledge by investigating how design can engage with the pursuit of a more perfect way of life.
